Schedule: Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
(hours to be determined by semester lab schedule)
Salary: $18.23 to $25.50 per hour
Start Date: August 15, 2011

NATURE OF THE WORK
The principal and customary work of the employee in this employment class consists in assisting the teaching personnel in the preparation, presentation, supervision and evaluation of laboratory work, field work and workshops.

The Laboratory Technician will oversee and supervise the processes in the metal and plastics studios both in and out of class time. Plastic Studio: milling, lathe work, vacuum press forming, vacuum bagging, painting, fabrication and finishing of plastics and resin work. Metal Shop: milling, lathe work, welding, sheet metal, fabrication, finishing and painting.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist teachers during regular class hours; assist students both in and out of class time;
Prepare the studios for class use. This includes setting up of equipment and materials necessary for in-class instruction or assignments;
Demonstrate to students the proper and safe use of equipment, machinery, tools and materials used in the metal and plastics studios and assist them in such use as required;
Develop, implement and enforce health and safety protocol for the studios. This includes keeping supplies in an organized and non-hazardous manner;
Maintain the studios in a safe, clean and orderly manner (see detailed task list), recycle old projects and scrap materials;
Develop, implement and maintain an inventory and sign-out procedure for tools and equipment; ensure they are returned in good shape;
Keep an up-to-date inventory of all equipment, machinery, tools, furniture, etc., for the Industrial Design program;
Provide regular and preventative maintenance and repair on all equipment, machinery and tools in the most economical and efficient manner; keep an up-to-date record of maintenance schedules;
Order and receive supplies, materials, repair parts etc; prepare purchase requisitions, make contract with potential suppliers, maintain record of all purchases;
Control and monitor studio’s budget as specified by the departmental chairperson;
Build a library of reference materials and samples;
Other related duties as assigned by the Dean.

QUALIFICATIONS
To have a college diploma in an appropriate specialty or a diploma or an attestation of studies which is recognized as equivalent by the competent authority.

CONDITIONS

Excellent oral and written English communication skills and working knowledge of French (testing may be required)
Competency in the following areas: milling, lathe work, vacuum press forming, painting, general processes of fabrication and finishing of plastics and resin work, welding-ARC, M.I.G., T.I.G., sheet meal techniques, fabrication processes with sheet, tube, extrusion.
Knowledge of traditional rapid prototyping and modeling techniques.
Basic Microsoft Word and Excel skills (testing may be required)
Knowledge of CAD & ability to read, interpret and criticize technical drawings
Knowledge of health and safety issues related to the field
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
