About the Jewish Learning Initiative:
The basis of this initiative is to respond to the current needs of the Montreal Jewish community based on the findings of an extensive research study taken in 2010 (Imagine 2020). From the research we have discovered there is an increasing pattern of assimilation, an increasing inter-marriage rate and that less than half of Montrealers have had a Jewish elementary education. However, Imagine 2020 research also shows that a majority of the population felt it is important to provide some type of Jewish education for their children.
In response to these findings, greater emphasis needs to be placed on enhancing Jewish education. In addition to our work with Jewish Day Schools, attention needs to be directed toward providing educational programs for unaddressed populations. The Montreal Jewish community is very diverse with regards to culture, geography, affiliation and language and it is crucial to ensure that the needs of all segments of the community are met. The overall objective of this initiative is to increase the number of people receiving a Jewish learning experience in the Montreal community and to increase the depth and impact of the offerings.
We are now conducting focus groups to learn more about the community’s interests, needs and barriers to participation in regards to Jewish learning programs.
Focus Group 1
Who: Ashkenazi parents who have children (up to age 13) who do NOT attend Jewish day school
Date: Monday, December 19, 2011
Time: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Where: Federation CJA building, Cummings Square
Food will be served.
Focus Group 2
Who: Intermarried and/or secular parents who have children (up to age 13) who do NOT attend Jewish day school
Date: Wednesday, December 21, 2011
Time: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Where: Federation CJA building, Cummings Square
Food will be served.
Focus Group 3
Who: Sephardic parents who have children (up to age 13) who do NOT attend Jewish day school
Date: Tuesday, December 20, 2011
Time: 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Where: Federation CJA building, Cummings Square
Food will be served.
