[quote:3jbktrku]MONTREAL — One person was injured in Montreal’s east end on Tuesday after an explosion and fire at a Petro Canada refueling station.
Firefighters were called to the scene at about 4:45 p.m. after an explosion occurred while employees were working to fill up two 50,000 litre ranks from a fuel tanker truck.
One person injured in the blast was transported to hospital, though their injuries are not considered life-threatening. Six other people were treated for shock.
According to a witness, several explosions followed the initial blast.
Each explosion caused a fireball and a thick cloud of smoke, said Nino Victorino, who owns a Kia dealership that faces the site of the explosion.
«It was an extraordinarily loud boom and there was a big mushroom (cloud),» added Pascal Bouchard, who also witnessed the incident.
Nearly 100 firefighters arrived to battle the resulting fire, which included a first wave of Petro Canada firefighters followed by those from Montreal.
Two foam trucks were also dispatched to the scene because the tanker truck contained heavy diesel, a highly flammable material that cannot be extinguished using only water.
Montreal’s fire service has stressed that the incident does not pose a risk to the environment. [/quote:3jbktrku][quote:3jbktrku][/quote:3jbktrku]
