Every Montreal Analysts use the SAS Software to access the internal AMRP Database. As far as I know, this database is hosted using Netezza, but this doesn’t really affect us in our day to day tasks. SAS allows for a variety of ways to access, manipulate, calculate and report data. For example, someone having a lot of experience and knowledge with the SQL language will use a lot “PROC SQL” in SAS. I know that different software that use SQL (Access, SAS, Oracle, SQL Server etc.) all have their own particularities within the language, but globally they are all pretty much the same and thus SAS allows anyone experienced with SQL to do everything. Also, someone coming more from a “pure” SAS background will usually be more comfortable using “DATA steps”. In the end, you can do pretty much everything using solely one of the two, but being able to use both will really allow you to be a lot more efficient and quick, also usually making easier to read programs and queries. Besides that, we obviously use a lot Microsoft Excel. I guess this is pretty much a must in this business. I’d say that for someone to work here, he needs to at least have experience with either SQL (in any software) or SAS Data steps. Obviously knowing how to join multiple tables and also how to aggregate data is a must. It’s not sufficient for someone to have experience in data reporting if he only used front-end software such as Microstrategy, Access without being able to program SQL or something like SAS Enterprise which is basically drag-and-drop. He will not be efficient and fast enough for what we tend to need. I’m not sure if this makes sense for you, so don’t hesitate to ask for clarifications.
